? 206 cross; and the Holy Prophet explicitly said that ‘Jesus died at the age of one hundred and twenty years. ’ 1 Moreover, on the death of the Holy Prophet all the Muslims confirmed that prophets who had preceded him had all died. When a companion of the Holy Prophet doubted and some others asserted that ‘had Muhammad been a prophet of God he would not have died’, Hazrat Abu Bakr delivered an address in which he recited the verse from the Holy Quran: Muhammad is but a messenger; all messengers before him have passed away; so, if he dies or is killed, will you then turn upon your heels? 2 On hearing this verse, all the doubts concerning the death of the Holy Prophet vanished from their hearts and they wholeheart- edly believed that, like all previous prophets, he too had passed away. Again, we read in the well-known ‘History of the Prophets and Kings’ of Abu Jafar Muhammad Ibn Jarir at-Tabari that on the death of the Holy Prophet, the Muslims of Bahrain doubted the truth of the Holy Prophet and turned back to their earlier belief, saying: ‘Had Muhammad been a prophet he would not have died. ’ Jarud, son of Mualla, belonging to the clan of Abdul- Qais, who had acquired adequate religious knowledge during his stay in Medina, put the following question to his tribesmen: 1.
