Chapter Eleven—Jesus Goes to India 159 given up the practice of making sacrificial meat offering, as has been done by the Jews of other countries, who have ceased to offer such ever since the destruction of the Second Temple. . . . Moreover the Jews who had been led into captivity at the time of the destruction of the First Temple and did not return at the close of the 70 years, had already forsaken the custom. But the fact that the prac- tice has been in vogue among the Beni-Israel in India from time immemorial, goes to prove that the ancestors of the Beni-Israel were actually in Palestine during the time of the existence of the Second Temple, and that they left it some time or other before its destruction. 1 Thus we find that long before the appearance of Jesus the bulk of the lost tribes of the Israelites were living in the North, North- West, South and South-West of India. The Mission of Jesus Jesus was the Messiah of the Israelites, and he proclaimed in clear- cut words (Matt 15:24): I am not sent but to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. The term ‘lost’ can be taken in two ways, literal and metaphori- cal. It can therefore be applied to the lost tribes metaphorically, 1.
