Keith Johnston in his Dictionary of Geography, writes:— The natives [of Kashmir] are of a tall, robust frame of body, with manly features, the women full formed and handsome, with aquiline nose and features, resembling the Jewish. 1 10. Dr. Francois Bernier, in his ‘Travels in the Mogul Empire: AD 1656–1668’ (translated by Archibald Constable), writes:— On entering the kingdom [Kashmir], after crossing the Pire-penjale mountains, the inhabitants in the frontier villages struck me as resembling Jews. Their countenance and manner, and that indescribable peculiarity which enables a traveller to distinguish the inhabitants of differ- ent nations, all seemed to belong to that ancient people. You are not to ascribe what I say to mere fancy, the Jewish appearance of these villagers having been remarked by our Jesuit Father , and by several other Europeans, long before I visited Kachemire.
