Chapter One—Passages from the Gospels 5 The gist of this prayer of Jesus was that he might be saved from death, not because he was afraid of laying down his life in the way of God, but in order that the will of God about His messenger might be fulfilled against the will of his enemies. This is the mean- ing, as I understand, of Jesus’ saying: ‘Not what I will but what thou wilt. ’ Had Jesus known that his death on the cross was Gods’ will he would never have prayed: ‘All things are possible unto thee, take away this cup from me’; i. e. , the cup of death which his opponents had held up to his lips for him to drink. The Cup was Taken Away We believe the aforementioned prayer of Jesus was heard by God and accepted. Our belief is based on the following grounds: 1. Jesus himself claims that God heard his prayers: Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me.
