Chapter Eight—Did Jesus Die on the Cross and Ascend to Heaven? 105 down to the earth: wherein were all manner of fourfooted beasts of the earth, and wild beasts, and creeping things, and fowls of the air. And there came a voice to him, Rise, Peter; kill, and eat. But Peter said, Not so, Lord; for I have never eaten anything that is common or unclean. And the voice spake unto him again the second time, What God hath cleansed, that call not thou common. This was done thrice: and the vessel was received up again into heaven. 1 Had these people given any thought to this matter of visions they would have known that vision can be from Satan or the result of their own thoughts; a vision contrary to the word of God can- not proceed from Him. When God said to Moses that ‘Swine. . . is unclean to you: ye shall not eat of their flesh’, 2 then the voice heard by Peter that all beasts are clean certainly was the voice of the devil, not of God. As for Paul, we cannot describe him more accurately than he has described himself. He says: And unto the Jews I became as a Jew, that I might gain the Jews; to them that are under the law, as under the law, that I might gain them that are under the law; to them that are without law, as without law,. . . that I might gain them that are without law. 3 1.
