Understanding S al A t 186 person and saying, ‘Peace be on you, O prophet. ’ ( H ay ā te Quds ī , pp. 614-615) ________ O _________ اَلسَّالَم ُ عَلَيْنَا Peace be on us One of the etiquettes of prayer is to observe Dur ū d before we pray for ourselves. Whether we pray for ourselves in Qiy ā m , Ruk ū ‘ , Sajdah , or any other time, we should always follow the pattern of prayer that Qa‘dah has taught us. That pattern is that we should first glorify Allah Almighty, then we should observe Dur ū d, then we should pray for ourselves. The Messenger of Allah sas heard a person supplicating during prayer. He did not mention the greatness of Allah, nor did he invoke blessings on the Prophet sas. The Messenger of Allah sas said: “He made haste. ” He then called him and said, “If any of you prays, he should mention the exaltation of his Lord in the beginning and praise Him; he should then invoke blessings on the Prophet sas ; thereafter he should sup- plicate Allah for anything he wishes. ” ( Ab u D ā w u d , Book 8, Chapter 509)
