as 28 in the service of the needy and the poor. He taught them meek- ness and humility. He laid great stress on mercy and forgiveness. Jesus as exhorted them to convey the message of God even in the face of all opposition with courage and determination. He told them that they could not succeed unless they were prepared to sacrifice their honour and wealth in the cause of Allah, and give up their personal comfort for the sake of Allah. He is reported to have said: Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: ‘For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. ’1 He warned them of the persecutions they were to face in the name of religion. He said: Blessed are you when people shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake. Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven. 2 The followers of Jesus as suffered greatly at the hands of the Jews but remained steadfast.
