Chapter Nine—Jesus is Hung on the Cross 59 with Joseph taking with him about thirty kilograms of spices, a mixture of myrrh and aloes. ’1 In fact, the ointment which had been prepared in advance was applied to his wounds. All the ingredients of this ointment have properties of healing wounds and subduing pain. This wonder- ful ointment known as Marham-e-Isa, or the ‘Ointment of Jesus’, is recorded in many medical books throughout history such as the famous medical treatise known in the West as the ‘Canon of Medicine’ by Avicenna. 2 This book was used as the standard text- book of medicine in Europe for centuries. They also smoked the grotto with aloes and other herbs which have tonic qualities to bring Jesus as back to consciousness. Thus, ‘Jesus lay in the tomb over the Sabbath. He would not regain con- sciousness for many hours, and in the meantime the spices and linen bandages provided the best dressing for his injuries. ’3 After a short time in the sepulchre, Jesus as had recovered sufficiently to be able to walk.
