There- upon, the Holy Prophet sa answered: ‘O ‘Al i , why do you express this grief? This event has given you the same posi- tion in relation to me, as H a r u n [Aaron] held in relation to M u s a [Moses] in his absence. You are to me what Aaron was to Moses. The difference is that you are not a Prophet. ’ This h ad i th has been reported in different ways in S a hih al- Bukh ari. The meaning is essentially the same. Now, the present day ulema insist that in this h ad i th the word ba‘d i does not mean anything other than the asser- tion that there is no Prophet after the Holy Prophet sa. It has no relevance to the temporary absence of Holy Prophet sa from Madinah. Hadrat Sh a h Waliyyull a h Mu h addith Dehlav i , univer- sally acknowledged as the Mujaddid (reformer) of the twelfth-century, very well known to Muslims of the sub- continent and who is cited as a great thinker in the so- called White Paper, writes: It must be clearly understood that the object of this h ad i th is to highlight the appointment of Hadrat ‘Al i (Allah be pleased with him) to act in the place of the Holy Prophet sa when he was to be absent from Madi- nah during his expedition to Tab u k. Also, it high- lights Hadrat Al i ’s resemblance to Hadrat H a r u n as when Hadrat M u s a as had journeyed to the Mount. It is to be noted that the word ba‘d i here means ‘ ghair i ’
