[ 46 ] Hadrat Sa’ad bin Ab i Waqq as reports that the Holy Prophet sa said to Hadrat ‘Al i ra : ‘You are to me what H a r u n [Aaron] was to Mu sa [Moses], except there is no Prophet after me. ’ ( S a hih al-Muslim Kit a bul- Fa da ’il, S a hih a l-B u k h ari Kit a bul-Fa da ’il, and Masnad Ahmad bin H anbal , Masnad ‘Abdull a h bin ‘Abb a s bin ‘Abdul-Mu tt alib ) Another version of the h ad i th says: ‘…except that you are not a Prophet. ’ Still another version quoted by Masnad Ahmad bin H anbal reads: ‘…But do not assume that you have become a Prophet. ’ The rest of the h ad i th is the same. The background of the h ad i th is that the Holy Prophet sa was leaving for an expedition and appointed Hadrat ‘Al i to act as an Am i r [leader] in Madinah during his absence. Hadrat ‘Al i was a great warrior and had accompanied the Holy Prophet sa on all prior expeditions. For him to be left behind was very painful. He felt he would be deprived of the privilege of jih a d and that people may think the Holy Prophet sa was displeased with him.
