H A D R AT M IR Z A GHU L A M AH M AD A S 73 to achieve His true and holy cognition—let alone the compre - hension of Prophets and Divine Books—unless divine light illu - minates the human eye. Therefore, the ra h m a niyyat [gracious - ness] of God demanded that His blind and unseeing creatures should be helped greatly. And that the disbelievers should not be committed to the everlasting torment of hell on account of the denial of such doctrines after sending a Messenger and a Book once, even though after the passage of a long time, the later gen - erations could not understand them to be any more than pious and commendable statements. In fact, it should be clear and evident to a rational person: How can God, who is Ra h m a n [Gracious] and Ra hi m [Merciful], prescribe so great a punishment as condemnation to everlasting hell for peoples of different nations who have heard of the Quran and the Messenger after many centuries, and who, not being pro - ficient in Arabic, cannot understand the excellences of the Holy Quran. Nor can the conscience of any human being accept that a person may be condemned without being provided convincing arguments that the Holy Quran is the Word of God. That is why God Almighty has promised to continue to appoint Khulaf a ’ so that, being invested with the light of Prophethood by way of zill, they may demonstrate the excellences of the Holy Quran and its holy blessings to the people, thus making them accountable. It should also be remembered that in every age such a conclu - sive argument assumes different forms, and that the Mujaddid of the time is equipped with the faculties, capacities, and qualities suited to reform the mischief of that time. Thus, God Almighty will continue to do so as long as He wills, so that reform and virtue may continue to flourish. And these statements are not
