Foreign Hand? Who Directed Karachi Riots (From 'STAR' Karachi-Man) Observers here sense some foreign hand behind the spora۔dic disturbances that greeted the Ahmadia Conference and re- sulted in several arrests, injuries and much of unpleasantness- a feature which had never defaced Karachi's characteristic calm۔The time of such ugly demonstrations is considered rather significant immediately after the obviously American-inspired MPO Tamasha had so miserably flopped۔The Americans are very bitter about the way the MPO was ignored and insulted not only by the public and press in Pakistan but also by the Government۔Much of it was consi- dered due to the Foreign Minister, Ch۔Zafrullah۔The aggrieved Americans could not have got a better op۔portunity to exploit to induce the public to dislike the Foreign Minister۔The Ahmadi Conference is being held almost on the ruins of the MPO-The MPO Pandal is still only in the process of dismantling۔And just here in the same Jehangir Park, Chaudhri Zafrullah has had to face perhaps the most-hostile-ever demonst- ration in his life۔There is increasing evidence of the fact that perhaps the U۔S۔Offices and missions in this country are ever-playing the part they are entitled to play within the internationally recognised sphere of diplomacy۔During the last several weeks U۔S۔has had to face an increasing stream of not so pleasant comment in the Press, particulary what is considered to be official or semi official۔The spectacle that Karachi has had to witness at the Jehangir Park has been shocking۔Never before was such un- ruliness seen in this city۔Tear-gassing and Lathi charges have been practically alien to this town۔What makes it worse is that the occasion was a relgious conference۔Apart from the fact that inspiration was, probably foreign, the ugly sight of one conference being disrupted by an- other hostile camp and police trying in vain to ward off trouble was an insult to the capital of any country۔4 *STAR' Exclusive۔Vol۔2 No۔37, May 24, 1952 Shaban 29, 1371
