upon him,] is abolished entirely. All blood that has been shed in the pagan period is to be left unavenged. The first claim on blood I abolish is that of Ibn Rabi 'a bin Al Harith bin 'Abdul Muttalib [a close relative of his] who was fostered among the Banu Layth and whom Hudhayl killed. Admonish each other to treat women with kindness for they are your trusts (You will be accountable for them). You have no authority over them except if they are guilty of glaring misconduct. If they are, then leave them alone in their beds and chastise them, but not too severly. If they obey, you have no justification (to be harsh to them), so seek none. Remember you have certain rights over your women; so also have your women certain rights over you. Your right over them is that they should lead chaste lives. They should not allow any person in your home of whom you disapprove. Their right over you is that you are made responsible for their livelihood. " (Tirmidhi) 69
