Eleventh Answer— Children are raised and are caused pain and admonishment for their training. This hardship is not called punishment or reward. Instead, it is considered a proper upbring - ing. Why, then, are not the sufferings of this world regarded a part of divine training, not as punishment and reward—if not for an individual, but maybe for the world in general. This answer is fur - ther elaborated in the twelfth answer. Twelfth Answer— When our revered Ha d rat Mas ih as [ Jesus] healed a congenital blind, his disciples enquired why the boy had been blind: Was he blind on account of his sins or the sins of his parents? Ha d rat Mas ih as replied: It was neither due to his sins nor the sins of his parents. Instead, he was blind to manifest God’s Majesty. He meant that it was intended to demonstrate the sta - tus and truthfulness of Ha d rat Mas ih as , the beloved Messenger of Allah the Almighty and Seal of Prophets from amongst the Israelites. My purpose in narrating this incident is to show that there are many other causes of pain and pleasure besides the rec - ompense of deeds. On what grounds do the believers of a w a - ga - wan say that deeds of a previous life cycle are their only cause? Thirteenth Answer— There are thousands of causes in the law of nature and the infinite works of God. Think of the causes mentioned in medical science and the symptoms and treatment by which we try to discover the causes and then prescribe effective remedies.
