40 آمَنُ كَفَرَ فِسْقُ قَلَمُ صَمَدُ كَرَمْ عِجْلَ حِجَج فُتِحَ فَهِيَ اَخْرَجَ فَعَلْنَ خَرَجْنَ أَظْلَمَ فَاخْرَجَ يَحْسَبُ الْحَمْدُ كَمْ لَبِثْتَ سَنُقْرِئُكَ تَفْتَا تَذْكُرُ لَقَدْ عَلِمْتَ سَنة اِسْتَغْفِرُ اَلَمْ نَشْرَحْ لَكَ صَدَرَكَ. LESSON 12. LETTERS OF PROLONGATION (LONG VOWELS) fathah' 'alif preceded by fathah 1+, wāw preceded by ḍammah 2+2 and yā preceded by kasrah + are letters of prolongation. . They stretch the sound of preceding letters. . In Arabic the word madd ✓ expresses the meaning of stretching so these three are named huruf madd (6,3,1) after their character or quality.
