But you must know that those ordinances and commandments that were applicable to the earlier religious communities—but which have been quoted in the Holy Qur’an—are also tenable for us and we, too, are under command to obey those, unless our own Prophet sa or our Book instructs us to part with it…Thus, under this principle the [mention in the Qur’an about the] commandment to kill the apostates among the Children of Israel is, in fact a teaching for us Muslims.
