155 GLOSSARY ‘ A d —The name of an ancient tribe mentioned in the Holy Quran. In Islamic tradition, the Adites are believed to be among the first inhabitants of Arabia who were destroyed by God. The town they lived in was called Iram. (See 89:6-14) Ahlul- H ad i th —A sect in Islam which believes in the superior- ity of the A h ad i th to the Holy Quran. Ahlus-Sunnah —A branch of Is- lam that consists of the majority of its adherents. Sunni Muslims regard their denomination as the mainstream and traditional- ist branch of Islam—as distin- guished from Shiites.
