" 24 Practice of Recitation in S al a t The whole of the Qur’ a n is delightful but the Holy Prophet Muhammad sa used to recite particular S u rahs in S al a t. He kept their subject matter and suitability in mind. In Z uhr and ‘A s r prayers he would silently recite various S u rahs after S u rah Al-F a ti h ah. In Fajr, Maghrib and ‘Ish a ’ prayers his recitation after Al-F a ti h ah used to be in a loud voice. In Z uhr S al a t the recitation in the first two Rak‘ a ts used to be twice as long as the recitation in the last two Rak‘ a ts. As per narration by Hadrat Ab u Sa‘ i d Khudr i ra the recitation in each of the first two Rak‘ a ts consisted of nearly thirty verses. Hadrat J a bir bin Samurah ra tells us that in Z uhr and ‘A s r S al a t, S u rah Al-Lail used to be recited. This S u rah consists of twenty one small verses.
