CHAPTER 24 The Holy Prophet Muhammad sa 's Amiability in Wars 582 Excellent Conduct at the Battle of A h z a b After the Battle of Uhud, the Battle of A h z a b was a grave test for the Muslims of Mad i nah. On the incitement of Ban i Na di r, the Arab tribes of Ban u Ga t f a n, Ban u Sulaim and the Quraish of Makkah planned to attack Mad i nah jointly. For this purpose an army of four thousand soldiers was assembled. It had three hundred horsemen and one and half thousand camel riders. This army left Makkah under the command of Ab u Sufy a n. The other tribes of Ban u Asad, Fazarah, Ashja‘ and Ban u Murrah joined them and this army swelled to ten thousand soldiers. Compared to this large army the Muslims were only three thousand in number. The Holy Prophet Muhammad sa consulted his Companions and accepting the opinion of Salm a n F a rs i , he decided to dig a trench around Mad i nah for defence. The Muslims were saved from the sudden attack of the idolaters due to this prudent measure. Their helpless enemy burnt with anger and vengeance. At this critical time H u du r sa ' s quality of leadership displayed itself in an exceptional manner. Even though it was the most dangerous time for the Muslims, their lives were shaken and their situation was unbearable, yet the Holy Prophet Muhammad sa was their support and a source of comfort for them.
