It took three long years to collect £21,000. But I addressed the community gathered at London for hardly two hours and we got promises and cash donations amounting to £28,000. This was due to the grace of Allah, the Magnificent, and not by my power. But Allah, the Glorious, has jealous regard for this station and office (of Khilafat ) which he has bestowed on me. I will not suffer the community to put me in a position, in answer to the demand of Africans for money for the job, to say that I was very rich but that all my wealth was dependent on redemption of promises of which I had a trunkful, and that as soon as they were honoured I shall be remitting them the money.
