A Review of the Pakistani Government’s “White Paper”: Qadiyaniyyat—A Grave Threat to Islam [ 27 ] The subjects mentioned in every s u rah of the Holy Quran are so vast that it is impossible to name them comprehensively according to their subject matter. ( Tafh i mul-Qur’ a n, by Abul Ala Maududi, vol. 1, p. 46 under Tafs i r S u rah al-Baqarah , Id a rah Tarjam a nul-Qur’an Lahore) This may sound like a trivial matter, but the fact is that Allah has given titles to all s u rah s—one s u rah is named ‘ al- Baqarah ,’ another is ‘ Y u suf ,’ another ‘ Muhammad ,’ another ‘ al-Muddaththir ’ and so forth. Then why does Maulav i Maududi question the names that Allah has given to those s u rahs ? It would only mean that those names given by Allah are not comprehensive and eloquent. This notion, filled with ignorance, amounts to a cruel attack against the eloquence and clarity of the Holy Quran. One wonders about the nature of this commentary, written by a religious scholar. The fact is that he is unable to comprehend the subject of the s u rah himself and consequently unable to understand its relation to the respective title. Thus, he attributes his narrow-mindedness to the Holy Quran and Allah. Let us examine Maulav i Maududi’s so-called ‘world renowned’ commentary of the Holy Quran. He has given the interpretation of hu r in Tafh i mul Qur’ a n, under S u rah a s - Sa ff a t, S u rah ad-Dukh a n, and S u rah ar-Ra h m a n. The summary of his long description of ‘ hu rs ’ is as follows:
