258 With Love to Muhammad sa the Kh ā tam-un-Nabiyy ī n when he said to his companion, “Grieve not, for All ā h is with us. ” Then All ā h sent down His peace on him, and strengthened him with hosts which you did not see, and humbled the word of those who disbelieved, and it is the word of All ā h alone which is supreme. And All ā h is Mighty, Wise. 252 It was necessary here for All ā h, the Exalted, to speak about a companion of the Holy Prophet sa and the background to the statement made by the Holy Prophet sa and that is why All ā h, the Exalted, chose to discuss it in the verse. Similarly, All ā h, the Exalted, mentions the “blind man” in the following verses because it was important to do so: َ ﻋَﺒَﺲ ّٰۙٓ وَﺗَﻮَىل ؕ اﻻَْمعْٰﻰ ُ ﺟَﺎٓءَﻩ ْ اَن He frowned and turned aside, because there came to him the blind man. 253 What follows is another example of All ā h, the Exalted, choosing to discuss three companions of the Holy Prophet sa in the context of a revelation: ﺑِﻤَﺎ ُ اﻻَْرْض ُ ﻋَﻠَهيِْﻢ ْ ﺿَﺎﻗَﺖ اِذَا ّٰۤ ﺣَىت ؕ ﺧُﻠِّﻔُﻮْا َ اذلَِّﻳْﻦ ِ اﻟﺜَّﻼَﺛَﺔ َ وَّﻋَىل َّۤ اِﻻ ِّٰ اهلل َ ﻣِﻦ َ ﻣَﻠْﺠَﺎ َّ ﻻ ْ اَن وَﻇَﻨُّﻮْۤا ْ اَﻧْﻔُﺴُﻬُﻢ ْ ﻋَﻠَهيِْﻢ ْ وَﺿَﺎﻗَﺖ ْ رَﺣُﺒَﺖ ﻟِﻴَﺘُﻮْﺑُﻮْا ْ ﻋَﻠَهيِْﻢ َ اتَب َُّ مث ِؕ ؕاِﻟَﻴْﻪ َّٰ اهلل َّ اِن ُْ اﻟﺮَّﺣِمي ُ اﻟﺘَّﻮَّاب َ ﻫُﻮ And He has turned with mercy to the three whose case was deferred, until the earth became too strait for them with all its vastness, and their souls were also 252 S ū rah At-Taubah, 9:40 253 S ū rah ‘Abasa, 80:2-3
