This dictionary entry clearly shows that wah ī and ilh ā m are interchangeable words and should not be taken to mean separate things. Furthermore, it is interesting to see what the commentators have written about the following verse: ْ اَو ٍ ﺣِﺠَﺎب ِ وَّرَآىٴ ْ ﻣِﻦ ْ اَو وَﺣْﻴًﺎ َّ اِﻻ ُّٰ اهلل ُ ﻳُّلكَِّﻤَﻪ ْ اَن ٍَ ﻟِﺒَرش َ اكَن وَﻣَﺎ ُ ﻳَﺸَﺎٓء ﻣَﺎ ٖ ابِِذْﻧِﻪ َِ ﻓَﻴُﻮْىح ً رَﺳُﻮْﻻ َ ؕﻳُﺮْﺳِﻞ ٌْ ﺣَﻜِمي ٌِّ ﻋَىل ٗ اِﻧَّﻪ And it is not for a man that All ā h should speak to him except by revelation or from behind a veil or by sending a messenger to reveal by His command what He pleases. Surely, He is High, Wise. 155 In Tafs ī r Jal ā layn , it is written regarding the word وحiٍا (by revelation), “ ِ بِاﻻgْFَِام a ْ او a ِ اedFَام a B ”, which means that wah ī refers to such communication of All ā h which is received through dreams or by way of ilh ā m.
