REMOVES A MISCONCEPTION as 828 mankind are only 104 192. The Quran mentions over 20 Prophets including Ahmad as , but it gives the names of only three or four Books. It is evident, therefore, that every Prophet has not brought a new law or religion. R uh ul Ma‘ a n i is a well known commentary of the Quran. It says: 'It is not necessary for a Messenger to bring a new and independent law. The progeny of Abraham as followed his law. ' 193 In another place it says: 'There are several of the Prophets mentioned in the Quran who were not given any specific book. ' (Vol. 2, p. 522). Under verse Al-M a ‘idah 5:45 Tafs i r-e-Kab i r says that God raised thousands of Prophets after Moses as who had no book and their duty was to enforce the Mosaic law. Tafs i r Ibn-e-‘Abb a s says under the same verse that there have been 1,000 Prophets between Mosas as and Jesus as who judged by the Torah. Imam R a z i has gone to the other extreme in asserting that a Nab i never brings a law. 194 (3) Many Muslims believe that Muhammad sa is the last Prophet and that no Prophet can come after him. I shall first state and examine the arguments that are given in support of this belief, then show that this is true only in a certain sense.
