Perhaps the British authorities could not forget the revolt of Delhi in 1857, during which the city mob had proclaimed a revival of the Mughal empire. However, as a result of the mutiny the Government of India by the East India Company was brought to an end. On August 2nd, 1858, the Queen signed the act which transferred the Government of India to the Crown. On November 1st, 1858, at a grand durbar held at Allahabad, a royal proclamation was published which announced that the Queen had assumed the govermment of India. It explained the policy of political justice and religious toleration which it was her royal pleasure to pursue. Thus was introduced the peaceful revolution that followed the mutiny. It was really a preparation for the advent of the 'Prince of Peace'. Peace was proclaimed throughout India on July 8th, 1859.
