KHILAFAT-E-R A SHIDAH 63 were the first to accept Islam and narrated the sacrifices that they had made for Islam. Hab a b bin al- Mundhir of Khazraj opposed this, and said that they could not accept a Khalifah from the Muh a jir i n , and that if the Muh a jir i n could not agree to this and strongly insisted upon their view, then , “one Am i r from us and one from you” should be acted upon. Hadrat Umar ra asked him to be careful of what he was saying and pointed out that the Holy Prophet sa has said that having two Am i rs at one time is unlawful. 13 (This indicates that there were such traditions in which the Holy Prophet sa had elaborated the system of Khilafat, but, in his lifetime, the Companions ra did not pay much attention to them. The reason for this is the Divine wisdom that I have mentioned before. ) Thus, Hadrat Umar ra concluded that the demand of making one Am i r from each group did not satisfy reason or sharia. Election of Hadrat Abu Bakr ra After some discussion, Hadrat Abu Ubaidah ra stood up and addressed the An sa r saying: You were the first people outside Mecca who accepted Islam; now do not be the first to pervert the principles of religion after the demise of the Holy Prophet sa.
