35 rak‘ a t respectively. The time for ‘Ish a ’ lasts until midnight. Besides the [specified five daily prayers] Muslims are advised to perform four units of nam a z comprising two rak‘ a t each between midnight and the break of dawn. This service is referred to as tahajjud and is not obligatory (on every Muslim). Whosoever wishes to perform it may do so. SUPPLICATION DURING NAM A Z Apart from the Arabic recitation of the obligatory prayers which comprise the nam a z , worshippers are permitted to pray in their native language for whatever they want. Such supplications may be made during any of the positions of prayer. VERSES OF THE HOLY QUR’AN As I mentioned, after S u rah Al - F a ti h ah it is necessary to recite at least several verses of the Holy Qur’an.
