18 The prosperity of Mecca depended upon the veneration accorded throughout Arabia to the Ka’aba, which was a center of pilgrimage, and upon the profits derived from the trade caravans plying regularly to Yemen in the south, to Syria in the north, and even farther afield on occasion (106:2 ⎯ 3).
