134 him, even though he had himself foretold as a sign of the Dajj a l that the words ‘ kafir ’ would be written on his forehead, 76 that he would have one eye, 77 and that he would fail to reach Medina. 78 None of these three signs was present in Ibn Sayy a d. He did not have one eye, nor did he have ‘ kafir ’ written on his forehead, as neither the believers nor the Holy Prophet s as could see it, and he was already living in Medina. Yet, the Holy Prophet s as did not contradict Hadrat Umar’s assertion that this man was the Dajj a l. This shows that the Holy Prophet s as knew that the signs of the Dajj a l could be interpreted in other ways and did not have to be fulfilled literally. If the Holy Prophet s as considered his prophecy to be subject to interpretation, how can anyone insist on taking it literally and refuse to learn of its deeper meaning?
