60 the presence of this teaching, how can one say that Islam teaches the use of coercion for its propagation? Allah does not teach us to fight to eliminate other religions; He teaches us to fight to protect them: َنْيِذَّل۟ا اْوُجِرْخُا َنِذُا َنْيِذَّلِل َنْوُلَتٰقُي ْمُهَّنَاِب اْوُمِلُظ١ؕ َو َّنِا َهّٰللا ىٰلَع ْمِهِرْصَن ُرْيِدَقَل۰۰ۙ ْنِم ْمِهِراَيِد ِرْيَغِب ٍّقَح ۤاَّلِا ْنَا اْوُلْوُقَّي اَنُّبَر ُهّٰللا١ؕ َو ْوَل اَل ُعْفَد ِهّٰللا َساَّنلا ْمُهَضْعَب ٍضْعَبِب ْتَمِّدُهَّل ُعِماَوَص َو ٌعَيِب َّو ٌتٰوَلَص َّو ُدِجٰسَم ُرَكْذُي اَهْيِف ُمْسا ِهّٰللا اًرْيِثَك١ؕ َو َّنَرُصْنَيَل ُهّٰللا 57 ْنَم ٗهُرُصْنَّي١ؕ َّنِا َهّٰللا ٌّيِوَقَل ٌزْيِزَع۰۰ Permission to fight is given to those against whom war is made, because they have been wronged—and Allah indeed has power to help them. Those who have been driven out from their homes unjustly only because they said, ‘Our Lord is Allah’. And if Allah did not repel some men by means of others, there would surely have been pulled down cloisters and churches and synagogues and mosques, wherein the name of Allah is oft commemo - rated. And Allah will surely help one who helps Him. Allah is indeed Powerful, Mighty. These verses clearly state that religious wars are only permissible when people are stopped from practising their faith. Such wars are not meant to destroy the places of worship of other people or to turn them away from their faith or to kill them, their purpose is to protect all faiths and preserve their places of worship. These objectives are in keeping with the teachings of Islam because Islam came to the world as a testifier and a protector, not as an aggressor and coercer.
