MAHARAJA’S PHYSICIAN Hadrat Maulw i Nur-ud-D i n ra — Khalifatul Masih I 60 unceremoniously. One evening Shaikh Fati h Muhammad happened to mention that he had some business with the Prime Minister. His guest urged him to go and call on the Prime Minister immediately. He said he dared not, on account of the Pusht u n retainers on duty at his residence. Thereupon Maulaw i N u r-ud- D i n ra said he would write to the Prime Minister at once. His host tried to dissuade him, but he took up pen and paper and wrote to the following effect: "I have heard that you have posted a strong guard of Pusht u ns at your residence to turn away all callers. The people of the State are accustomed to call on high dignitaties of the State at their residences. Kindly set aside a large room furnished with an Iranian carpet for the convenience of your visitors. You can receive them at your convenience, or refuse to see any you do not wish to see. But it is not compatible with your dignity that your visitors should be turned away unceremoniously by your Pusht u n guards. " 17 The letter was despatched immediately. A short while after D i w a n Sahib’s Private Secretary came with a lantern and told H ak i m N u r-ud-D i n ra that he had been sent by D i w a n Sahib to fetch him. Shaikh Fati h Muhammad apprehending danger from such a prompt and peremptory summons advised that he should not go at that late hour; but he went. He found no guard outside. D i w a n Sahib received him graciously, and said: "You will have noticed that there is no guard outside. I have dismissed them. Such and such a room has been furnished with an Iranian carpet and has been set aside for visitors. " His visitor thanked him for such prompt compliance with his suggestion, to which he replied:
