It is amusing that in our country (Pakistan), after some military coups, the ousted leaders bitterly complained to the U. S. later, that the U. S. intelligence networks never gave them advance warning of the simmering unrest. The leader of a country or a political party is overthrown, and the Americans are reproached for failing to give forewarning! You govern a country without the in-depth knowledge of that country and expect others to lend you that information! So, as the East becomes indifferent to its own affairs, so is the West becoming more keenly aware and sensitive to the happenings in the East. The foremost responsibility of patronizing the tyranny of the Shah rests on America and no sane person in the world can absolve America of this responsibility. This observation is not reflecting a feeling of hatred nor it is due to an emotional outburst; it is such an obvious fact that even a person of ordinary intelligence would admit. Monarchy of Iran was nurtured by America and, as a result, the responsibility of all the ensuing reactions lies squarely on the U. S. THE U. S. DILEMMA And whatever action America took to contain that reaction in Iran, against the Shah, was necessary to protect their own interest or, according to them, was essential to protect the interest of the world. They felt that now only two powers could benefit from this reaction. Either the power of religion, as symbolized by Khomeneism, or the power of Communism. And since Communism was a worse enemy, they grudgingly extended their tacit support to Khomeneism. If at that juncture, Communism had gained the upper hand in Iran, the present climate of peace between the U. S. and Russia was totally out of question. Then "Saddamism" would also not have been born and there would have been a great danger in the Middle East from Russia and the Communist-dominated Iran; a challenge against which the U. S. would have no counter response. Therefore it was in their interest and, as they claim, in the interest of the whole world, that they created Khomeneism and nourished it. When it gained power, the Iranians used their foresight and attempted to follow a middle course between the Super Powers for the continuation of their system and to protect it from the evil influence of the U.
