105 He says: ِا َّن ا َّٰﷲ َﻛ ﺎ َن َﻋ َﻠ ۡﻴ ُﻜ ۡﻢ َر ِﻗ ۡﻴ ًﺒ ﺎ [ Verily, Allah watches over you. ] (Holy Qur’an Ch. 4: V. 2) God Almighty explains in this verse that m any disputes in the world are based on rivalries. It is most peculiar that the strongest relationship of love is between a husband and wife. On the one hand, a man ’s whole life is spent running around taking care of his wife and children, and on the other, a woman ’s entire life is spent in providing comfort to her husband and taking care of his needs. B ut despite all this, they are each other’s rivals. If any small matter should occur [against her wishes] t he wife says, ‘ This is what m en are like,’ and if a man has a small dispute with his wi fe he says, ‘ This is what w omen a re like. ’ The Holy Prophet Muhammad sa said as an example, “Throughout his life, a man continually sacrifices for his wife, and takes care of all of her needs his whole life , but if one day something should happen against her wishes, she says, ‘ I have never seen anything [good] from you. Your treatment of me has always been bad. ’ ” Similar examples are also found in m en. There also some men, who after all the sacrifice s their wives have given , they say , ‘W e have never seen anything good in you. ’ Alas, what is the reason for this? The reason is that feelings of competitiveness have been created between a man and a woman. We have witness ed this sight ever since the creation of the world. A Golden Rule of the Holy Qur’an Since th e teaching of the Holy Qur’an ha d no t been revealed to the world yet that men and women have been endowed with similar strengths wom e n would stand up against m e n and m e n would stand up against wom e n. They lived [with each other] in affection and love, and even made sacrifices for each other, but as far as language was concerned, as far as speeches were concerned, and as far as writings were concerned, men used to say, ‘W omen have done this,’ and women would say, ‘ M en have done that. ’ It is this [conflict] towards which God Almighty directs His attention and says [in the verse quoted above] , ‘ O men and women, keep in mind that you have become watchers over each other whereas the true Watcher of you is God, Who watches to see how you employ the capa cities He has given you. We have instilled these capa cities in you so
