The Holy Prophet is reported to have said: تُسْتَأْمَرُ النِّسَاءُ فِي أَبْضَاعِهِنَّ : Women shall be consulted respecting their being given in marriage. بضع : Marriage; sexual intercourse; marriage-contract; a dowry; divorce; the authority possessed over a woman by her guardian who affiances her; an equal, particularly as a suitor in marriage. بضع : A part or portion of the night; a time thereof. مَضَى بِضْعٌ مِنَ اللَّيْلِ : A part of the night passed. The word بضع denotes a variety of numbers such as five, seven, ten etc. But generally it is understood to mean from three to nine. بضْعَةُ رِجَالٍ : From three to nine men. بِضْعُ نِسْرَةٍ From three to nine women بِضْعُ سِنِينَ : From three to nine years. فَلَبِتْ فِي السِّجْنِ بِضْعَ سِنِينَ : So he lived in the prison for three to nine years )12:43( بضع also signifies a part or portion. بَضْعَةٌ : A part or portion. The Holy Prophet is reported to have said الْفَاطِمَةُ بَضْعَةٌ مِنّى : Fatimah is a part of me. 1) : بضَاعَةٌ( Merchandise; an article of merchandise; a portion of one's property which one sends for traffic. أَسَرُّوْهُ بِضَاعَةً : They concealed him as a piece of merchandise (12:20); (2) money spent on buying and selling articles of merchandise وَجَدُوْا بِضَاعَتَهُمْ رُدَّتْ إِلَيْهِمْ : They found their money returned to them (12:66). = بَطْؤَ aor. يَبْطُرُّ inf. noun بَطْءٌ and بَطَاءٌ and أَبْطَاءٌ[ : He became slow or backward, tardy or dilatory. أَبْطَأَ مَشْيَهُ : He made his pace slow. بَطَّأَ بِهِ )and بَطَّاهُ ( : It made him slow or backward; it kept or held him back. مَنْ بَطَّأَ بِهِ عَمَلُهُ لَمْ يُسْرِعْ بِهِ نَسَبُهُ : He whose deeds held him back, his lineage will not advance him. مَا بَطَاكَ : What kept you back. لَيُبَطِئَنَّ : Who will tarry behind )4:73(. بَطِرَ ]aor. يَبْطِرُ and بَطَرَ aor. يَبْطُرُ inf. noun 1) : [بَطَرٌ( He exulted or exulted much or excessively; he behaved insolently or un-gratefully; he behaved proudly and boastfully on account of wealth; (2) he was or became stupefied or confounded and knew not what to do; (3) he was stupefied or confounded on account of fright. بَطِرَ الْحَقَّ : He was disdainful of truth and did not accept it. بَطِرَ الشَّيْءَ : He disliked a thing while it did not deserve that dislike; he was or became brisk or lively; he لک 73
