i‘j a zul-Ma si h —A Miracle of the Promised Messiah as 17 Immediately on arrival, the disciples of P i r [Meher ‘Al i ] made the announcement that the P i r has come for the ‘debate’ and that he has accepted all of Mirz a ’s 11 conditions. As soon as P i r [Meher ‘Al i ] stepped into Lahore, flood of hatred for Ahmadis swelled like a flood. . . Abuses and profanities were rampant, and sermons were delivered from the pulpits declaring that the Promised Messiah as was worthy of being killed. (For details see W a qi‘ a t-e- S a hih ah by Hadrat Muft i Muhammad Sa diq, published by Anw a r-e-Ahmad i , Lahore, 1900, p. 41, p. 63) Eventually, though, the arrival of P i r [Meher ‘Al i ] in Lahore and the publication of the inflammatory announcements by his disciples were to prove an inextricable embarrassment for him. A Sincere Effort to bring P i r [Meher ‘Al i ] into the Contest of a Written Commentary As soon as they learnt of the arrival of P i r [Meher ‘Al i ], the sincere Ahmadis in Lahore made an earnest attempt to persuade him for the contest of a written commentary. They published a statement on August 24, the day of his arrival, that the devotees of P i r [Meher ‘Al i ] are publishing announcements full of abuses from Lahore and Rawalpindi, but why don’t H ak i m Sul ta n Ma h m u d of Rawalpindi, Muhammad D i n, the bookseller of Lahore, and other devotees of the revered P i r ask him to announce in clear terms that he accepts the challenge of the Promised Messiah as for a contest of written 11 I. e.
