80 The commentary of al-Qa si dah of the Holy Prophet sa truly were of keeping themselves clean and pure. COUPLETS 18 and 19 In battle, they stood with the Messenger in ranks. Intoxicated in love, they marched forward to the battlefield. The blood of sincere lovers was shed under the sword; Like the blood of sacrificed animals flowing under the knife , In these two couplets the central theme revolves around the complete obedience of the companions, their steadfastness in battle, and their willingness to sacrifice their own lives. In the Battle of Badr the Muslim soldiers numbered 313 while their Meccan opponents numbered 1,000. However, the state of the Muslims was strengthened by their devotion, love and faith. This was best described by one of their opponents, ‘Umair bin Wahab, who was assigned the task of estimating the size of the Muslim army. The Meccans were delighted when ‘Umair advised
