21 my opinion, I would say the issue of Khilafat is indeed a very important one, and that it should be resolved as early as possible’. I then asked him if he could specifically mention even a single project during the lifetime of Hadrat Khalifatul Masih I ra that would have remained incomplete if he were not in his position as Khulaf a’ , and for which he had to be appointed as the Khalifah ? I told him that if Khalifatul Masih I ra was needed even in times when there was no crisis, then he had to realize that a Khalifah is always needed and is needed even today. I told him that the function of a Khalifah was to rectify flaws in the Jam a ‘at whenever they emerged, and that his job was not to work like a machine which continues working unstopped. I said, ‘Maybe you are not aware that the Jam a ‘at can suffer some discord the very day we are in. In that case, who is going to adjudicate the matter’? I assured him that we would not initiate any problem with regard to the issue of Khilafat , and asked him to even suggest some suitable person for the job. I rather went as far as saying that I was ready to take bai‘at at the person’s hand, and that there were some other people also who were close to me. So, they too would get initiated. Similarly, there were a few, I told him, who enjoyed good relations with that person, so they too would be willing to take bai‘at at his hand. I told him the matter would thus be settled. Then I said that the debate should not be whether there should be a Khalifah , but there can be a discussion of who the Khalifah should be. At that time, I reiterated that he should nominate some person from among his own friends, and that I would be ready to pledge allegiance to any such person, but I made it clear that I would never accept the notion that a Khalifah was not needed.
