17 GRANDFATHER’s DEMISE A lthough ‘Abdul-Mu tt alib had eleven or twelve sons of his own, he loved his innocent and orphan grandson the most. He would have the child eat and sleep with him and kept him by his side all the time. Since he was Chief of the Quraish and a dignified elder of the community, he usually sat inside the Ka‘bah on a carpet laid specially for him and none dared to sit beside him; but his grandson would sit beside him without any inhibition. If anyone admonished him once or twice, ‘Abdul-Mu tt alib would say: “Do not stop him; he will sit beside me. ” But alas! The grandson wasn’t able to enjoy his grandfather’s love and compassion for long. Not two years had passed
