There are five fundamental principles (or Pillars) of Islam ( see Part-1. 3): 1. Declaration of Faith---the Kalimah 2. Observance of Salat. 3. Paying of Zakat. 4. Performance of Hajj (Pilgrimage) to Ka`bah 5. Observance of Saum (Fast) during Ramadan. What is Declaration of Faith or the Kalimah? The Kalimah is to declare that: There is none worthy of worship but Allah and that Muhammad is His Messenger What is Salat ? Salat means observance of the Five Daily Prayers, which are obligatory in Islam. What are the the Five Daily Prayers called? These are called: Fajr, Zuhr, `Asr, Maghrib and `Ishaa.
