B AR Ā H Ī N-E-A H M ADIY YA — PART F IV E 504 I have been sent by Almighty God as H akam yet they desire to be arbiters over me. Now I will turn my attention to the fact that Hadrat ‘ I s a , may peace be upon him, has indeed died and that the belief that he is still alive is contrary to the Holy Quran and authentic a ha d i th. Keep in mind that the Holy Quran proclaims loud and clear that Hadrat ‘ I s a as has died a natural death. At one place Allah the Almighty, by way of promise, says: 1 ىٰۤسْيِعٰي ْيِّنِا َكْيِّفَوَتُم َو َكُعِفاَر َّيَلِا In another verse, He speaks of the fulfilment of this promise, as He says: 2 َو اَم ُهْوُلَتَق اًۢنْيِقَي ْلَب ُهَعَفَّر ُهّٰللا ِهْيَلِا The first verse means, ‘O ‘ I s a ! I will cause you to die a natural death,3 ٭ meaning you will not die by being killed or crucified, and I shall raise you towards Myself. ’ Thus, this verse was by way of a promise. And the second verse quoted above points to the fulfilment of this promise; its translation and commentary is as follows. The Jews 1. S u rah a l-e-‘Imr a n, 3:56. [Publisher] 2. [Publisher] 3. ٭ Keep in mind, the word توفّی [ tawaff i ] in the Arabic language does not just mean causing someone to die, but means causing someone to die a natural death, which is not through murder or crucifixion or other external caus- es. This is why the author of Kashsh a f, who was the pre-eminent scholar of the Arabic language, has explained the words َ یْك ِّ ی ْ مُتَوَف ِّ اِن [ inn i mutawaff i ka ] in his commentary as اِنِّی ْ مُمِیْتُك َ حَتْف َ اَنْفِك meaning that, ‘I will grant you a natural death. ’ And it is on this basis that it is written in Lis a nul-‘Arab and T a jal-‘Ar u s: توفّی المیّت استیفاء مُدّتہ التی وفیت لہ وعدّد ایّامہ وشھورہ واَعوامہ فی الدنیا. meaning that, توفّی [ ta- waff i ] of a deceased person means that all the days, months, and years of his natural life are completed. ’ And this can only happen if the death is natural and not through murder.
