B AR Ā H Ī N-E-A H M ADIY YA — PART F IV E 474 on one hand and also calls him a Nab i [‘Prophet’] on the other, is not in contradiction to the injunctions of the Holy Quran, inasmuch as such Prophethood—being that of an ummat i —is a reflection of the Prophethood of the Holy Prophet, may peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, and is not an independent Prophethood. Had you properly reflected on the a ha d i th, this objection would not have arisen in your mind at all. You say that ‘ I s a [ Jesus] who is to descend has been called Nabi yy ull a h [‘a Prophet of God’] in a ha- d i th; I say that the same Jesus who is to descend has also been called an ummat i in a ha d i th. 1 ٭ Can you tell me from the Holy Quran or Hadith that ‘ I s a ibn Maryam [ Jesus son of Mary], the past Prophet, has been called an ummat i at any place? It is thus quite clear that this ‘ I s a who is called both a Prophet and an ummat i is a different ‘ I s a. He is not the ‘ I s a [ Jesus] who lived among the Israelites, who was an independent Prophet, and to whom the Inj i l was revealed. How can you make him an ummat i [follower of Holy Prophet s as ]? In S a hih Bukh ari , where the future ‘ I s a is described as an ummat i , his physical appearance is also described as distinct from the first ‘ I s a. Of course, had the a ha d i th only used the word Nab i and not ummat i , one might have been mistaken, but now that S a hih Bukh ari has clearly written ُم ك ْ اِمَامُكُم ْ مِن [‘your Imam from among you’] with regard to the coming ‘ I s a: ‘O my followers, the coming ‘ I s a is also only an ummat i and no more. ’ Likewise, S a hih Muslim records these words َم ك ْ ُم ْ مِن ك اَمَّ meaning that, ‘ I s a will be your leader and will be from among you. ’ That is to say, he will be an individual from within this Ummah. Thus, when it is proven from these a ha d i th that the ‘ I s a to come 1. ٭ An ummat i is the person who cannot reach his perfection without follow- ing the Holy Prophet, may peace and blessings of Allah be upon him. So can it be imagined with regard to Hadrat ‘ I s a [Jesus], may peace be upon him, that he will remain imperfect until he returns to the world and enters the Ummah of the Holy Prophet, may peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, and fol- lows him?
