Laying to Rest some Doubts expressed by Maula wi Sayyed Muhammad ‘Abdul W ah id 1 ٭  His Statement— In the verse 2 اَم ُهْوُلَتَق َو اَم ُهْوُبَلَص there remains the question that if صلبوہ ما [ m a s alab u hu— ‘they did not crucify him’] is taken to mean that the Jews did not kill Hadrat ‘ I s a , may peace be upon him, on the cross, then the phrase ما قتلوہ [ m a qatal u hu —‘they slew him not’] that precedes it is rendered super- fluous. And if it is argued that the words ما قتلوہ [ m a qatal u hu —‘they slew him not’] are added to mean that his legs were not broken with a view to killing him, even granting this implication, the words ما قتلوہ [ m a qatal u hu —‘they slew him not’] should have followed the words ما صلبوہ [ m a s alab u hu— ‘they did not crucify him’]; for, as a rule, legs are bro- ken after the person is taken down from the cross. So, what is the reason for placing ما قتلوہ [ m a qatal u hu —‘they slew him not’] before ما صلبوہ [ m a s alab u hu— ‘they did not crucify him’]? Please explain. My Answer— Bear in mind that the following are the verses of the Holy Quran in which the above is mentioned: 1. ٭ The said Maulaw i is a school teacher and Q adi at Brahmanbaria, District Tippera, Bengal. (Author) 2. They slew him not, nor crucified him i. e. killed him by crucifixion ( S u rah an-Nis a ’, 4:158). [Publisher]
