Chapter One 37 in understanding subsequent chapters, I will here quote some verses of the Holy Quran to prove that the Holy Prophet, may peace and bless- ings of Allah be upon him, was unlettered. So let it be known that the particulars of these verses are as follows: Allah the Almighty says, َوُه ْيِذَّلا َثَعَب يِف َنّٖيِّمُاْلا اًلْوُسَر ْمُهْنِّم اْوُلْتَي ْمِهْيَلَع ٖهِتٰيٰا َو ْمِهْيِّكَزُي َو ُمُهُمِّلَعُي َبٰتِكْلا َو َةَمْكِحْلا َو 1 S u rah al-Jumu‘ah, Part Number 28 — ْنِا اْوُناَك ْنِم ُلْبَق ْيِفَل ٍلٰلَض ٍنْيِبُّم He is God, who has raised among the unlettered people a Messenger from among themselves who recites unto them His Signs, and puri- fies them, and teaches them the Book and wisdom, although they had been, before, steeped in manifest misguidance. َنْيِذَّلا َنْوُعِبَّتَي َلْوُسَّرلا َّيِبَّنلا َّيِّمُاْلا ْيِذَّلا ٗهَنْوُدِجَي اًبْوُتْكَم ْمُهَدْنِع ْۤيِباَذَع ُبْيِصُا ٖهِب ْنَم ُءٓاَشَا َو ْيِتَمْحَر َو ْتَعِس َّلُك ٍءْيَش اَهُبُتْكَاَسَف َنْيِذَّلِل َنْوُقَّتَي َو َنْوُتْؤُي َةوٰكَّزلا َو ْلُق اَهُّيَاٰۤي ُساَّنلا ْيِّنِا ُلْوُسَر ِهّٰللا ْمُكْيَلِا اَعْيِمَج ْيِذَّل۟ا ٗهَل َثِٕىٰٓبَخْلا َو ُعَضَي ْمُهْنَع ْمُهَرْصِا َو َلٰلْغَاْلا ْيِتَّلا ْتَناَك ْمِهْيَلَع َنْيِذَّلاَف اْوُنَمٰا ٖهِب َو ُهْوُرَّزَع َو ُهْوُرَصَن َو اوُعَبَّتا يِف ِةىٰرْوَّتلا َو ِلْيِجْنِاْلا ْمُهُرُمْاَي ِفْوُرْعَمْلاِب َو ْمُهىٰهْنَي ِنَع ِرَكْنُمْلا َو ُّلِحُي ُمُهَل ِتٰبِّيَّطلا َو ُمِّرَحُي ُمِهْيَلَع َنْيِذَّلا ْمُه اَنِتٰيٰاِب َنْوُنِمْؤُي. ُكْلُم ِتٰوٰمَّسلا َو ِضْرَاْلا ۤاَل َهٰلِا اَّلِا َوُه ٖيْحُي َو ُتْيِمُي اْوُنِمٰاَف ِهّٰللاِب َو ِهِلْوُسَر ِّيِبَّنلا ِّيِّمُاْلا ْيِذَّلا ُنِمْؤُي ِهّٰللاِب َرْوُّنلا ْۤيِذَّلا َلِزْنُا ۤٗهَعَم َكِٕىٰٓلوُا ُمُه َنْوُحِلْفُمْلا. 2 S u rah al-A‘r a f, Part Number 9 — َو ٖهِتٰمِلَك َو ُهْوُعِبَّتا ْمُكَّلَعَل َنْوُدَتْهَت I inflict punishment on whom I will, and My mercy encompasses all things, so I will ordain My mercy for those who abstain from every kind of idolatry, unbelief, and indecency, and pay the zakat, and also for those who truly believe in Our Signs. These are the people who believe in that Messenger, the Prophet, in whose person are found two Signs of Our perfect power.
