PUBLISHER'S NOTE xi بح - a guttural aspirate, stronger than h. kh - pronounced like the Scottish ch in loch. dh - pronounced like the English th in that. ؟ ص - strongly articulated s. ض d - similar to the English th in this. ط - strongly articulated palatal t. ظ - strongly articulated z. ع غ '- a strong guttural, the pronunciation of which must be learnt by the ear. a sound similar to the French r in grasseye, and to the German v. It requires the muscles of the throat to be in the 'gar- gling' position to pronounce it. ق q - a deep guttural k sound. '- a sort of catch in the voice. Short vowels are represented by: a for (like u in bud). i for (like i in bid). и for (like oo in wood). Long vowels by: ā for orآ )like a in father(. for or 1 و (like ee in deep). for (like oo in root). Other vowels by: ai for (like i in site). au for (resembling ou in sound).
