GLOSSARY 203 Mi'raj The Spiritual Ascension of the Holy Prophet Muhammadsas to Heaven, described in the Holy Quran and related in detail in ha- dith literature. Mubāhalah Prayer duel. As de- scribed in Surah Al-e-Imran, a contest between claimants to di- vine support wherein each party prays for God to curse the lying party. Muhaddath A recipient of Divine revelation. Mustafa The Chosen One, a title of honour used for the Holy Prophet Muhammad sas. Mutawakkil The one who trusts in God. Nawwab An honorific title ratified and bestowed by Mughal emperors to semi-autonomous Muslim rul- ers of princely states in South Asia. The female equivalent is 'Begum' or 'Nawwab Begum. Pīr(s) Literally, 'old' (in Persian). Generally refers to a spiritual leader at whose hands students have taken an oath of allegiance. Title is commonly used for leaders of Sufi orders. An attribute of God as mentioned in Sürah al-Fā- tihah and throughout the Holy Quran. The verbal noun of this at- tribute is Rahmāniyyat. Rubūbiyyat The divine quality of sustaining or nurturing; the ver- bal noun of the attribute Rabb or 'Lord'. Şahib A title of respect similar to di- verse English terms like Mister, Honourable, and Revered.
