A pproaching the West—201 Notes on Qur’ ā nic References 1. Translation of the Qur’ ā nic quotations is taken from The Holy Qur’ ā n translated by Maulaw ī Sher ‘Al ī with alternative translation of, and footnotes to, some of the verses by Ḥ a ḍ rat Mirz ā Ṭā hir A ḥ mad, Fourth Successor of the Promised Messiah, published by Isl ā m International Publications Limited, UK, in 2004. 2. References to the quotations from the Holy Qur’ ā n are given in parentheses at the end of the quotations. 3. The first number in the reference to the Holy Qur’ ā n indicates the S ū rah (Chapter) number and the number(s) following the colon indicate the Verse number(s). For example, (7:175) indicates Verse number 175 of Chapter 7 of the Holy Qur’ ā n. 4. The verse numbering system in this work includes Tasmiyah (Bismill ā h-ir-Ra ḥ m ā n-ir-Ra ḥī m) at the beginning of the Chapter as the first verse except for the one Chapter that does not start with Tasmiyah. In some other translations, which exclude Tasmiyah while numbering verses, the same reference in item 3 above would be (7:174). 5. Verse references in [brackets] refer to verses which contain subject matter equivalent to that in the preceding reference or quotation. 6. [Additions in brackets] within a quote are by the author to clarify the context of the verse.
