Lines from "Dur-e-Sameen" Translation of Urdu poetry of Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad, The Promised Messiah How very clearly manifest Is the light of that Source Of all kinds of light, That the entire universe Has turned into a mirror, For the eyes to catch The fullest reflection Of the Divine Being, The Lord God Himself! Looking at the moon, Last night, I was thrown Into a great agitation, And a restlessness of the mind: For, to a certain extent, It carried a suggestion Of the beauty and charm Of my Beloved! Wonderful, indeed, Is the manifestation Of Thy power, on all sides: It does not matter, In the least, which way I turn to look; for even That way, in itself, turns out To be the right path For obtaining a vision Of Thee ! Waves of Thy beauty Are to be seen In the effulgence Of the sun; and every star Carries a beam Of Thy flash! With Thine own hands Hast Thou sprinkled biting salt On the wounded souls: So, naturally therefore, On every side, now, Is raging a tumult Of the waxing cries of love, Wrung from the desolate heart Of the disconsolate lovers! How marvellous, Indeed, are the qualities Thou hast made inherent In every particle, In every grain of sand: And who is there Can read the immense Meaning of these profound Mysteries! The human mind Fails, absoultely, to fathom The immensity of Thy powers: And who is there can unravel These difficult knots! That I be able to meet Thee, I have mingled With the dust, hoping, thereby, To find some remedy, would put An end to this torture Of separation ! For a single moment, Do I find any rest, Any peace, without Thee: My life is sinking, As sinks the heart Of a patient, stricken down By some mortal disease! What is the meaning Of these cries, this noise, This tumult, in Thy lane? Turn Thy attention, immediately, Lest a poor mortal, Caught in the violent throes Of love, should finally come To lose his life! Not even
