— Part I 142 Islam guards over the conduct of his umma, and ensures that they adhere to justice and fair play. He was entrusted with this task because he stood supreme among all the just. He enjoyed the full trust of his Supreme Master, the Lord of the universe. Not only is he described as guardian over Muslims, but in the following verse he is also described as guardian over all the Prophets as : And how will it fare for them when We shall bring forth a witness from every people, and shall bring you as a witness against these! (S u rah al-Nis a ’; Ch. 4: V. 42) The Straight Path The way of life proposed by the Quran for Muslims is not only well-balanced and belonging to the middle path, but is also pronounced to be free from any apparent or hidden crookedness. The essence of Islam is that all its teachings are finely balanced and free of prejudice. Elaborating on this theme further, the Quran says:
