The Animal Kingdom 69 After a long period of passing through several stages of progress, it widened its circle. Individuals became conscious of their surroundings and acquired awareness and sensitivity for their own species. At a higher stage than this their sensitivity and awareness extended to other species. The presence of sensibility as observed among humans has become amazingly vast and intense. Here consciousness and sensibility are at play together. The difference does not relate only to comparative areas of operation but also applies to the quality of awareness and sensibility. There is no longer a vague sense of something, like a worm being in pain or the pleasure of an insect finding food, but it is far more clearly defined and intense. It is more intricately related to various functions of the human body and its memory; as such it becomes an intricate phenomenon. It is is evident from this that these two faculties have played an important and complex role in refining and cultivating human behaviour in all its spheres, leaving indelible marks on all aspects of human conduct.
