— Part III 300 attribute anything to God without His approval. Even in worldly courts, it is the custom that every witness has to take an oath in the presence of the judge that he will tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. That same judge, before his appointment, has himself had to take an oath before higher authorities that he would dispense everything with justice. Addressing Prophet Muhammad sa , Allah says: And remember when We took from the Prophets their covenant, and from you, and from Noah, and Abraham and Moses, and Jesus, son of Mary, and We indeed took from them a solemn covenant; That He may question the truthful about their truthfulness. And for the disbelievers He has prepared a painful punishment. (S u rah al-A h z a b; Ch. 33: Vs. 8-9) The detail of what the covenant of Prophets as was, is not mentioned here. However, the purpose of this covenant is clearly specified in the portion of the verse: which means so that Allah will certainly enquire from the true people about the authority of their truth.
